About the Program

Benton County Fire District #4 offers an Intern Firefighter Program for individuals seeking hands-on experience while preparing for a career in the fire service.

Interns work directly alongside career firefighters and participate in daily station operations, training, and emergency response. They are assigned to the same 48/96 shift schedule as career staff, providing firsthand experience with the responsibilities and expectations of a career fire department.

BCFD4 serves the City of West Richland and surrounding areas of Benton County, responding to more than 2,300 calls each year. The District operates from three stations and is staffed by career firefighters, interns, and volunteers.

Members of BCFD4 also participate in specialized teams, including:

  • Swift Water Rescue
  • Technical Rescue
  • Incident Management

This environment allows interns to gain experience across a wide range of emergency services while learning directly from experienced firefighters.

Position Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Submit a complete and accurate application
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment and eligible to work in the United States
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Hold and maintain an insurable driving record
  • Pass required written and physical agility tests
  • Successfully complete a background investigation
  • Meet the District’s criminal-history requirements
  • Maintain the physical fitness necessary to perform firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties

Lateral Entry and Prior Experience

Applicants with current volunteer service or recent experience with a fire district or department may be considered for lateral entry within the intern program. All minimum qualifications must still be met, and applicants must earn a passing score during the testing process to advance.
